In the 1880s, Vin Mariani was a really popular drink, it was a new type of wine that was laced with cocaine. And if you thought about drinking it, you’d probably think “oh this is a weird wine, I feel weird.” But in reality, it was the cocaine. The book “this is your brain on drugs” tells us that cocaine raises dopamine, and the dopamine makes us feel good.

The wine was so popular, it even got endorsements from famous people like the queen of England. But in 1906, food manufacturers had to label all their products with ingredients, and the popularity of Vin Mariani went down. A few years later, in 1914, cocaine was banned. **Why would you ban cocaine?** Are you just mad because it makes people feel good? You’re not mad at other products that raise dopamine. I guess that’s really the question.

If you had cocaine, you’d probably think “oh I feel weird, I don’t like this.” No, the reason you don’t like it is because it’s fucking addictive. And now Vin Mariani is gone. Everyone had to stop making the cocaine laced wine, but it’s fine. Now they could just make cocaine on the black market, and it’s like, what the hell does it matter. They can just make it without the wine.
