CMV: The intro to the Star Wars sequel trilogy has a really specific, really deliberate reason for why they're restarting and reusing all the plot points.

Holy shit I finally get it. After the last decade's worth of hate, I finally get why they made the sequels the way they did.

I'm not going to argue this point as much, but the sequels are generally considered to be a vortex that sucks all joy out of the universe; they're unpopular, they're not as well-liked, and they put the whole franchise in a very precarious position.

But, I believe that as JJ Abrams was sitting at the writer's table, he understood that this was Disney's property now, he understood that this was going to be a franchise that was going to be aimed primarily at kids, and he understood that there was money to be made.

So what he wanted to do was set up a sequel trilogy not for the folks my age, not for the adults who grew up with this franchise. He wanted to create a sequel trilogy that was aimed at kids, something that would capture their spirit and their hearts, even at the expense of us adults.

He wanted to recreate the magic that Star Wars had for us when it first came out, and he deliberately aimed to recreate all the storylines to do it.

He wanted to recreate the "Balto" moment, as I'm going to call it, that moment where he understood that this was something special, this was something groundbreaking, this was something that was going to stay with him forever.

And I think it worked. My niece is obsessed with this franchise; she's a fan of Rey and Finn and BB-8 and Kylo Ren. And when she watches the movies, she's watching them the way I did. She feels the same wonder, the same excitement, the same feelings of joy.

Now, I'm not saying that the movies are really good. I'm not even saying they're good at all. I have so many problems with them, and I'm not even going to get into all of them. The point is, I believe Abrams and the rest of the team deliberately wrote the sequel trilogy to have this feeling, this tone, this atmosphere.

They wanted to create a new franchise aimed at kids, not adults, and they deliberately reused all of the plot points to recreate that magic.
