What is the deal with the 1911?

I've never owned one, nor have I ever shot one. I know there is a lot of love for the 1911 but I'm not sure why. A Glock 19 is smaller and lighter than a 1911, and holds more rounds than it. If you want a full size pistol a Glock 17 holds almost twice as many rounds in a smaller package. I know there are higher capacity 1911s, but they are silly looking.

The 1911s that get the most attention are the ones that are 100-300% the cost of a brand new Glock. And for the cost of a high end 1911 you could get a Sig or HK. The only real advantage I see the 1911 having is the trigger, but it's a poor choice for any situation that you might actually need to defend yourself - self defense, duty, etc. The only place I could see a 1911 being useful is target shooting, but even then there are other options that would be just as good if not better.

I know if I ever say anything negative about a 1911 anywhere else I'll be deemed a heretic and there will be a burnt mark where my house used to be. So please stay calm and explain it to me.
