How would magic use effect the environment?

Hi. So I recently decided to create a fantasy world for my new book. In doing so, I realized a major issue. Magic. It seems like magic does not play well with the environment. Now, I understand that my magic system does not help this. As a refresher, magic is fueled by a mysterious transmutable substance, which is used to create most magic items and is a bit expensive. This substance, known as Essence, is created by a magical process that takes animal matter and converts it to Essence. While this process is cheap, it uses more than it produces, which is why Essence is very expensive on the market currently. <br><br>I have learned of this issue through a straw man argument. It was a village that was the largest producer of this substance, but they were struggling to produce enough more than they used. This is not sustainable. Which brought me to my major issue, the magic industry is entirely unsustainable. The main source of magic is not sustainable, which by default means the magic industry isn't. I currently am working on ways to fix this, but I have realized that this issue stretches far beyond the substance. <br><br>I have decided I want to see how many issues I can find, which is where you come in. I need you to come up with any issues you see the magic system causes with the environment. This will help me figure out how widespread the issue is, and how I can fix these issues. Any help will be great, as I do want to be as realistic as I can in this fantasy world.<br><br>Edit: Okay so I can't believe how much attention this post has gotten.
