What if the world had 48 hours a day instead of 24? How would society change?

This is an idea I've been toying with for a fantasy book I am writing and I thought I'd come to you guys to see what your thoughts are on the matter. I'd love to get a discussion going.

So the world has 48 hours a day instead of 24. There's still a 24 hour day-night cycle, so one half of the 48 hour day is daytime and the other is nighttime. I've been calling the extra 24 hours "dusk". The first 24 hours is false daytime and the last 24 hours is false nighttime.

This means that plants photosynthesize from 0:00 to 48:00, but the sun is only in the sky for, say, 0:00 to 24:00 and 24:00 to 48:00. The other 24 hours is just flat out dark.

This also means that the time of day doesn't so much influence when people sleep as the moon's phases do. When the moon is full, you sleep at the dark part of the dusk so you can enjoy "moonlight" which is false daytime. When the moon is new, you sleep at the dark part of the night and enjoy the "starlight" which is false nighttime.

So, how would society change? One thing I imagine is that there's just more time to do things. If you're a student, you've got an entire extra day to do your assignments and study for a test, or you could just use it as extra time to fuck around. I imagine a lot of people would just sleep in later.

Another thing I think you'd see is changes in the way we tell time. In the modern world, it's pretty simple to tell what time it is and know what the sun's doing at the time. I imagine that with world with a longer day, you'd see more use of analog clocks. And in the past, there would be a big difference between a 12 hour clock versus a 24 hour clock. I imagine you'd see a lot of 48 hour clocks, especially in important things like train schedules.

I think there would also be a big difference in how people perceive time as a social construct. Humans are naturally wired to sleep and wake with the sun. But now the sun is only in the sky half the time. I imagine that would lead to a lot of changes in philosophy and religion and how we see ourselves and society. I imagine people might be more likely to see time as a social construct with less influence from nature. I imagine that people might see the passage of time as less of a big deal.

You could also imagine how this would affect the way you plan your day. You could have a 24 hour workweek, where you work for 24 hours and then have the rest of the week off. You'd have the entire rest of the week free to do what you want. I imagine you'd see a lot more part-time jobs like this. I imagine you'd also see a lot more nightshift jobs. Nightshift jobs are seen as bad because you have to work all night and then sleep all day when everyone else is awake. But in a world with a 48 hour day, you could just as easily work all "night" and then sleep all "day".

I imagine you'd also see a lot of changes in how we do entertainment. Imagine going to a baseball game and it being the 48th inning. Imagine if a football game was divided into four halves instead of two. I imagine you'd see a lot more ultra-marathon runners and triathletes and other endurance sports. I imagine you'd also see a lot of board games and card games and things where the goal is to just be the last one standing. Imagine a 48-hour chess tournament.

I imagine there would also be a lot of changes in how we do transportation and travel. Imagine a road trip that was 48 hours long instead of 24. I imagine that would make cars a lot more practical. It would also make air travel a lot more practical. Planes wouldn't have to worry about flying at night, because there's a guaranteed a 24-hour period where it would be light out. Pilots would also have more time to fly, so they could have more regular schedules and you wouldn't see as much pilot fatigue.

I imagine you'd also see a lot of changes in how we do agriculture. You could have two growing seasons and two harvesting seasons per year. I imagine that would make food cheaper and starvation less of a problem.

I imagine there would also be changes in how we view menstruation. Women have been historically seen as inferior for bleeding once a month. I imagine if the moon was bleeding once a month, that would make people see women in a different light.

I imagine you'd also see a lot of changes in how we view the passage of time. Birthdays and anniversaries would be seen as a much smaller deal. You could have 48th birthday parties and 48th wedding anniversaries. I imagine it would be seen as weird to get married on a new moon, and then the next month when you're still married, you're already on your second moon-iversary.

I imagine you'd see a lot of changes in how we do holidays and celebrations. Christmas could last for 48 days and not just 12. You could have a 48-day Lent. You could have a 48-hour d resultCode. I imagine you'd see a lot of 48-hour festivals and such.

I imagine there would be a lot of changes in language and how we talk about time. I imagine we'd still have the word "noon" but we'd also have words for 0:00, 24:00, and 48:00. I imagine you'd see a lot of expressions like "the time when the stars shine brightest" or "the time when the moon is fullest". I imagine you'd see a lot of date and time expressions that were centered around the lunar cycle. Months would probably be seen as a bigger deal because the passage of time would be seen as slower.

I imagine you'd also see changes in the way we see ourselves and the passage of time. The world is a crazy place and a lot of people don't see a future for themselves. Imagine living in a world where time moved so slow that it felt like you had all the time in the world. I imagine people would be a lot more relaxed and there would be less of a sense of urgency.

I imagine there'd be a lot fewer people who were chronically late. You'd have so much extra time that it would be hard to be running behind schedule. I imagine it would also make it easier to be on time. Imagine being able to say "I know we're running a little behind schedule, but we've got an entire extra day to make up for it."

I imagine you'd also see a lot of changes in how we give directions and how we navigate the world. Imagine if whenever you used Google Maps, it gave you a 48 hour window to reach your destination. Imagine being able to say "It's going to take 48 hours to get there." and for that to be considered a short trip.

This is just what I've thought of so far. I'd love to hear what you guys have to say.
