What are your thoughts on Finland's teacher training?

Finland has a rather unique approach to teacher training. I just learned about it today and wanted to know what others think of the approach. All teachers pursuing a teaching degree must undergo a 5 year training program. The training is free. They are given a modest stipend. It includes one quarter of practical training. After completing the program, they must pass a national exam to become certified teachers. I think the US should try this approach. ?
