I think a guy was gonna kill me over a slice of pizza

This is the story of how I was almost attacked by a man over pizza. Now I know what you’re thinking, just give him the pizza! But hear me out.

I’m 22f, I’ve been using this delivery app for a little while now. It’s been a great gig. The app shows you the order before you accept, and you know what? Some customers tip. (Yes, that is not a normal thing on this app)

So I had gotten a tip from a fellow delivery driver, and finally the app showed an order that was tipped. $3.50! I didn’t want to go to this order, because it was less, and I usually try to get the bigger orders, you know, make more money. I was debating on whether to take the order or not, when the app gave me an in-app voice message, from the customer.

Now I know this is not normal, but I’ve had tipped orders in the past, and I guess the app had just rolled out a feature that allowed customers to communicate with us drivers.

Anyway, the guy left a message saying “I’m going to throw this pizza in the bin, I don’t want it, I’m a carnivore, I don’t eat vegetables”

*confusion* I thought, why would the customer leave a message about them not wanting veggies, I’m just a delivery driver, I’m not the cook. You could have ordered the no-veggies pizza, why are you telling me this, does it effect the delivery time? Will you not be home? Why would you leave this message?

From what the app showed, there were 4 slices, and on each of the pizzas, one was ordered with pepperoni and the other was ordered with vegetables. Okay, I guess this guys girlfriend is coming home? Or maybe he’s not the carnivore and it’s for someone else.

Since the order was tipped, I decided to take it, because I wanted to know why this guy left that message. Maybe he was just trying to communicate something to me.

I get to the guys house, and there’s no girlfriend. No one but him.

Mister Carnivore was sitting on the couch, and I put the pizzas down on the coffee table in front of him, and told him “Here you go, sir, have a good day”

He gets up, walks over to me, and shows me the pizzas. I was kind of confused why he was showing me the pizzas, but then I noticed one pizza was slightly open.

He was angry. “This pizza has veggies”

I said “Yes”

He was angry because the order said “cheese pizza” not “cheese and vegetable pizza”

Now I don’t know, it’s possible that the order was wrong, maybe the cook didn’t put the right order down, maybe the customer accidentally clicked “veggie pizza” instead of “cheese pizza” I don’t know. But I was just the driver. I told him “I’m sorry sir, that is the pizza that was given to me to deliver to you. My job is to deliver the food, I’m not the cook, I don’t have the ability to make food, or choose toppings”

He started getting angry and accusing me of changing the order. “You changed this order, you took my cheese pizza and added veggies, because you know I didn’t want them”

I was like “I’m just the driver. Sir, I know this isn’t what you ordered, but you can contact the restaurant, they will deliver you a cheese pizza with no toppings free of charge. I’ll even help you write the message to them, you tell them you want a cheese pizza, no toppings. But I cannot help you, I’m just the driver, this is all I can do”

He didn’t want to hear that.

He had an idea. “If I give you $20, will you take the veggie slices out?”

I told him ok, I can do that, but you have to give me the $20 first.

He didn’t want to give me the money first. He was afraid I’d just run out the door with the money.

I just thought he was paranoid, I would have done it for $20. It was just 2 slices of pizza! It’s not like I had anything against this guy.

So I didn’t get any money.

I took the two veggie slices, and he was happy, he didn’t seem angry anymore.

That was it. I was about to leave, and then he called out to me. “Hey, you know what, I don’t want those slices, they’re tainted now. You can have them, I’m going to throw them away”

I just thought this guy was stupid, and I was going to throw them away anyway because I wasn’t going to eat them. But I took them, and put them in my bag.

I walked outside, and I thought about what had just happened. That guy was so angry about his pizza, and then he just stopped being angry. It was almost as if his anger had a purpose, and he didn’t want to fight anymore.

I didn’t think about it too much, but I thought about how stupid that guy was to offers me $20, but not pay me.

I was driving away, thinking I should have taken the slices before I took the $20, but oh well, I didn’t want to fight that guy, I just wanted to do my job.

A couple of hours later, I was thinking about what would have happened if I had taken the slices, and then ran out the door. He would have been angry, and he was angry at first, but then he offered me the slices. Almost as if he was going to do something, but didn’t.

A couple of hours later turned into a couple of days, and it didn’t matter. Maybe that guy was going to attack me, but he didn’t. I have no way of knowing if he was dangerous or not, but now I’m looking back on this experience, and I thought I’d share it with you.

This happened a few months ago, but I’m looking back on it, and I realized, what if he killed me over pizza? What if he really was going to throw the pizza away, but because I took it, now he’s angry and he’s going to attack me? Or if he didn’t offer me the slices, I would have left, and he wouldn’t have attacked me.

What if.

That’s all I can think about when I look back on this.
