Advertisers should be required to show their best polled control data in ads

Advertisers pull polls out of their asses to try and influence your opinion and make their product seem more appealing. The best example I can think of is a Campbell’s Soup commercial I saw in which the narrator said that “2 out of 3 American prefer the taste of Campbell’sChicken Noodle soup over chicken noodle soups made with equal parts noodles and froze chicken.” They then cut to a graphic showing that what they actually compared the soup against was carrots, potatoes, green beans, and celery. Their poll told them that if they presented it as chicken noodle against chicken noodle, the average American would find that to be fishy.

Advertisers are using psychology to make you believe their product is the best, when in reality it isn’t.

For example, if you were buying a car and the dealer told you that his car was better than any other car on the market. He then showed you data that his car was faster, better on gas, and cheaper than a Ford Pinto, Lada Riva, Yugo, and the Tata Nano, you would see right through his bs. But if he showed you a commercial saying “82% of car owners agree that our car is better than the competition” and then cut to an graphic that said he compared his car to the four listed above, you would be angry that he presented it as he was comparing his car to all cars on the market, not just 4 pieces of dog shit.
