I was stalked by a sex worker

I worked in a Chinese restaurant. I was 18 and living alone and my biggest problem was I thought I was a functioning alcoholic.

I took one of the waitresses home periodically - our shifts didn’t finish until 1am and I don’t blame her for not wanting to wait for the bus that late and walk the alleys home.

One night I drove her back to the house I rented and we sat in the car for about half an hour smoking cigarettes and bullshitting.

As we were leaving a car pulled up and honked at her and I walked with her over to the car to say hi. I asked her about the guy and she said he was a ‘‘friend” and then she told me she used to work as a sex worker.

I felt bad for prying but then she said she was happy to talk about it as she trusted me. I drove her to work the next day and she told me about this man she used to see who was really nice but a little off.

Apparently he would tell her about all these dreams he had where he’d do things to her that she didn’t feel entirely comfortable with. She said that when she was seeing him she’d get calls all the time from blocked numbers and that someone was breaking into her house and moving things around.

She said she suspected it was the guy from the dreams but she didn’t want to think he was capable of that. She said she’d stopped seeing him and it had stopped.

I drove her to work the next day but she wasn’t feeling well so I drove her home. I sat with her for a few and then drove back to the restaurant. When I got there the owner told me that a man had been in looking for me. He described the guy and it was the honking guy.

I thought the girl had sent him for some reason so I texted her and she said no she hadn’t and that she didn’t know he knew where I worked. I told her not to answer any calls from unknown numbers and to check her doors and windows but she said it was probably nothing and she was just being paranoid.

I drove her to work the next day and then picked her up and drove her home. When I dropped her off that night the honking guy was standing outside. I told her to go inside and call the police and she said she couldn’t because she had weed at her house.

I went over and asked him what he was doing. He said he was waiting for his girlfriend and I said she wasn’t my girlfriend. He said how much he ‘‘respected’’ me for looking after her and then he said how much he loved her.

He said that he’d been looking out for her by breaking into her house and moving things around (I kid you not) to make sure she was safe. He told me that he knew she had been high at work that day and he was disappointed in her.

I asked him why he had been calling her and he said it was just to check in on her. Then he told me to stay away from her. I told him I would never do that and he got angry, but not before telling me how lucky I am.

I walked back to my car and drove away. I called the girl and told her what happened and she told me not to call her from my phone. I went home and went to bed.

I woke up to someone saying hello. I was laying on my side and when I turned around there was the honking guy. He was sitting in my computer chair and had a smile on his face.

I jumped out of bed and he stood up at the same time, but he didn’t move towards me. I told him to get out and he just smiled and walked out. I called the police but by the time they got there he was gone. They told me to change my locks which I did.

I told the girl about it and she said that she was going to call the police and get a restraining order. I walked her home from work and when we got there I noticed that her front door (which she told me she always locks) was open.

I told her to stay where she was and I went inside. No one was there except me. I called the police and they told me they’d send someone over.

I went outside to tell her the police were coming and she was gone. I looked everywhere and she wasn’t around. I waited by her front door but she didn’t come back. The police came and I told them she was gone and they said there was nothing they could do.

I never saw her again.

I’ve thought about her a lot over the years and I wonder what happened to her. I hope she’s okay.

But that’s my let’s not meet story.
