Consent has been a topic of interest and debate for several decades. The concept of consent has been used to challenge harmful, patriarchal norms and gender roles, to assert women's autonomy and agency, and to highlight power dynamics in relationships. However, the rise of LGBTQ+ visibility and changing gender norms have expanded our understanding of consent. Furthermore, the increasing popularity of "rough sex," BDSM, and other forms of non-traditional sexual practices have led to reevaluations of the concept of consent. Additionally, the growing awareness of restorative justice has led to a shift in how we approach sexual violence and misconduct, with some advocating for a more rehabilitative and less punitive approach. The increasing recognition of gray areas in consent, such as being able to consent to rough sex but not other forms of sex, and the complexities of consent in same-sex relationships, further highlight the need to rethink the concept of consent.

Overall, while the concept of consent remains important and necessary, its evolving nature and applications require ongoing reevaluation and refinement to ensure that it remains a useful and effective tool for promoting healthy relationships and addressing sexual misconduct.

Edit: I am not saying that consent should not be a part of sexual relationships, any form of non-consensual sex is wrong and completely immoral. This post is discussing how our understanding of consent and how we interpret consent is becoming outdated due to the reasons discussed in this post.

Edit #2: I would like to add that I do not believe that consent being an outdated notion is a positive thing, on the contrary, I believe that the changes in society that have caused the notion of consent to be somewhat outdated is a bad thing and something that we should be trying to change. It is our responsibility as a society to try and make these changes for the positive.
