How can I get through customs faster flying international from the US?

I'm going to Europe from the US in the next few days and I'm super duper nervous about how crowded customs is going to be. I've heard it's been a nightmare recently. I'm flying from a major US airport, but not one known for always being busy with customs. I have a layover on the way home, but not on the way there, if that information is relevant.
