She waited 12 hours for me to wake up

One summer night when I was 11 years old, my mom and dad had left to go to the grocery store. My dad had been watching TV with me in our living room, and though he asked me if I was gonna be okay while they were gone, I wasn’t scared. I saw no reason to be.

I remember that our front door was open, but there was a screen door shut and locked. That way, we could have a nice breeze without fear of bugs or other insects flying in. Looking back, I realize that the screen door wasn’t very durable.

My dad left our TV on when he and my mom left, but I decided to change the channel because I didn’t like the show he was watching. When I went to change it, I noticed a girl standing in the parking lot across the street, outside of the screen door. She was walking in our direction. She looked about my age, or slightly younger, and had shoulder-length brown hair.

She walked up to the screen door and looked straight at me. I waved at her, and she smiled back at me. I thought she was cute, so I smiled back. She walked across our front yard, towards the front door. I thought she might have been lost, so I walked up to the screen door. It was locked, thankfully. When I got to the door, she was still smiling at me.

In a very sweet and soothing voice, she said, “Hey, is your mom or dad home? I don’t have a phone, and my mom is really sick. I need to call 911.”

This girl was so sweet and well-spoken, and she genuinely looked like she was in a lot of pain, that I believed her. I was so naive, and I wanted to help her. There was something about her that convinced me. Something about her eyes. I’ll never forget them.

I told her that my mom and dad were at the grocery store, but that they would be back soon. She nodded and smiled, and I walked back over to the TV to continue watching it.

I thought she had left, but when I looked back at the door, she was still there! She was still smiling at me! I felt a little uneasy, but not scared. She looked too sweet to be a threat. I walked back over to the screen door and asked her what she was still doing there.

She cocked her head to the side and said, “I’m waiting for your mom or dad to get back, so I can call 911.” I nodded, and once again walked back to the TV.

I had forgotten that she was there, because I was engrossed in the show I was watching. When I looked back at the screen door, she was still there. She wasn’t even looking at me. She was just standing there. It was then that I was scared.

To this day, I don’t know how I did it, but I quietly got up from the couch, and ran up to my bedroom. I shut and locked the door. It was then that I heard her knock at the door. My heart racing, I looked out the window and saw her standing at the front door, still smiling. When she saw me, she blew me a kiss.

I was horrified. How could a 10 year old girl be so sweet, yet terrifying? I called 911 from my bedroom phone, and waited for what seemed like forever for them to show up. I looked out the window a few times, and she was still there, waiting!

At one point, she looked up at my window and she waved at me and smiled. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. It took the police 12 minutes to show up, but it felt like I waited for 12 hours. She was gone by the time they showed up.

Everytime I look out my bedroom window and see a girl standing on the sidewalk, I still get chills to this day.
