I am a 35 year old male. I was always a "picky eater" as a kid but as I got older I started to experiment more with food. I had to move to a new part of the country for work last year and I discovered a lot of new foods and I have learned to like them. I have always been on the skinny side but ever since I moved I have put on some muscle mass so I feel better about myself than I ever have.

I recently went back home to visit my family for the first time and they noticed I looked better so they started asking me about it. I told them about some of my new favorite foods and they laughed at me. I told them about some of the new workouts I have been doing and they also laughed. So I asked why they were laughing at me and they told me it was because I was acting like a "girly man"( I assume they meant like a pretty boy?) I told them I excpected them to be happy for me since they always called me skinny and weak when I was young but they just joked that I was going to be a skinny old man.

For dinner my mom made my favorite which was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. It was tasty as always and I told her so. My brother walked in and asked what we were eating and when my mom told him he said "You're making the girly man food? He's not even girly anymore so we don't have to make that anymore right? I joked that I was still a little girly so I liked the food and he just laughed. I asked if he was being serious and he and my mom were like "kind of". So I got up and took my unfinished plate and put it in the fridge and told my mom I would eat it later and I went back to my room. They tried calling me back out but I didn't answer. Later my dad came to talk to me about what happened and he thought I was being a dick and spoiling a family moment.

I think they should just be supportive of me like I would be if I were in their shoes. I'm not being a dick I'm just standing up for myself right? Or am I wrong? Am I the asshole here?

Tl;dr family made fun of how I look and the food I eat so I left dinner. Family mad
