Dear ***,

Thank you for taking the time to write to me about your opinions on filling the Supreme Court vacancy following the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this very important matter.

As you may know, Justice Ginsburg was an icon to many and dedicated her life to public service. I send my deepest condolences to her family and friends during this time.

As for the Supreme Court vacancy, I believe that President Trump and the Senate should fill the seat this year, as the people have spoken on the occupants of those offices as recently as 2016 and 2018. President Trump and the Republican Senate were elected to four- and six-year terms, respectively, and will continue to serve in their offices long after the next president is inaugurated and newly elected Senators take office. The Senate has confirmed Supreme Court justices in presidential election years before, including Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was confirmed in 1988. Furthermore, there is a long history of election-year confirmations that have been made with the advice and consent of a Senate controlled by the president’s party.

Thank you again for your thoughts on this issue.

Sincerely,

Ted Cruz
U.S. Senator for Texas
