After 16 years teaching I have decided to leave the profession. I love teaching but what makes it work is the pupil teacher relationship. Over this time I have witnessed things that have eroded this relationship. In order for a pupil to want to learn they need to love and respect their teacher.

I have a hard time remembering a time where this was more challenging than where we are now. I love my school, my colleagues and I respect the Senior Leadership team. I am not saying teachers are no longer being supported or valued. I am not going to put blame on any one person or organisation. Clearly there are a lot of factors at play, some of which are out of our control.

For me, it’s time to go. I am a 44 year old male and I know I have left it a little late. I am going to try something totally different and new. I have always been fascinated by neuroscience and would love to try to find a career related to that. I can see myself working in the mental health sector or in some form of coaching. The idea of a complete change is very exciting.

I will always look back on my time teaching with pride and love. I have never regretted it and have always been fortunate to feel valued and respected. I feel I have made a positive difference in the young peoples lives and that I was able to do it in a way that was authentic to who I am.
