I’m from the largest city in the world (36 million people), so I’m used to seeing crowds. Tonight I walked around Manhattan and it was so quiet, it actually creeped me out.

I’m from Delhi and I traveled to New York City for work purposes. I knew that Manhattan is known for its crowds, but the vibe here is so different from India. Tonight I walked around Midtown (Manhattan) at 9 pm and noticed hardly anyone on the streets. Some roads were empty.

Delhi is not like this even at 11 pm or 12 am, if you know what I mean. I’m not saying that our cities are better than yours or vice-versa. It’s just that the vibe here is very different from what I’m used to. I observed that people here keep to themselves but are nice nonetheless. I walked into a store to purchase some chocolate, they gave me a free cookie and a smile. I walked past a restaurant on the street, they offered me a free dessert and a smile. I stopped to ask someone for directions, they were nice and offered a smile.

I’m not used to this kind of treatment from strangers so it was a pleasant surprise. But on the flip side I noticed there was a homeless person on the street sleeping on a carton in the open, with no one to care. I think this is a problem in many big cities in the US, I saw a video of Los Angeles and it was similar. Anyway I digress, the whole vibe here is so different from India. I don’t think I’d prefer living in this city over my own city, but it’s just a difference in cultural values. That’s all.

So yeah I had a pleasant time in New York City so far. The weather has been good, I walked around a bit and noticed that there’s nothing to be afraid of walking around at night. People mind their own businesses and generally keep to themselves. The vibe was a bit too quiet for my liking, but I was passionate to explore the city. Anyway, I’m gonna be here for a long time, so will share more of my observations about the city on this subreddit.
