Hey, what's up with all the "I'm so stressed out with Common Core" posts?

I see a lot of venting lately on here about Common Core, testing, the curriculum, etc.

I teach in California and we've had Common Core for several years now. I'm not sure what the deal is with other states, but it seems like a lot of other states are just implementing it now and teachers in those states are starting to complain about the "stress of Common Core".

What's going on? Do teachers in other states use different curriculum? Do you have more standardized testing than we do in California? Or are teachers just stressed because they are being asked to change what they do?

I mean, Common Core isn't perfect. I don't know a single teacher who says, "Yes, everything about Common Core is great. My students love it!"

But I really don't get all the complaining. The Common Core standards are on the Common Core website for the world to see. There are tons of free curriculum resources out there that align to Common Core. In California we have CAASPP testing in the Spring which might be a slight pain in the ass to administer, but it's not that big of a deal. We also have lots of interim testing, but most of that is Quick Writes, IRIs, and other things that we can give to the kids during class hours and use the data to inform our teaching.

I've been teaching for over a decade and was teaching Common Core before it was even called Common Core. When the standards changed, it took like a day to change over my lesson plans. I maybe spent an hour on each subject changing over the standards that the kids needed to meet and then I was done. It wasn't that big of a deal.

I don't get the angst. I don't get the venting. I don't get why so many teachers seem to hate Common Core so much. I also don't get why so many teachers seem to think that Common Core is some kind of curriculum that the government is forcing on us. The government is requiring us to meet certain standards, but they aren't telling us how to meet those standards.

Can someone please explain to me why Common Core seems to be such a pain in the ass for teachers in other states but not in California?
