What’s the economic argument for non-profit private businesses?

A lot of people feel that businesses that operate on a non-profit model are more ethical and that capitalism should be more like this. An example would be Patagonia, and maybe most cooperatives. What is the economic argument for businesses to operate un a non-profit model?
