How did Washington manage to not attack any other country besides Japan in 1941-1945?

It seems like the US was doing a lot of stuff prior to 1941. They were supplying supplies to the UK and the USSR, patrolling the Atlantic alongside the UK and had a naval presence in the Pacifc to deter Japan from attacking the Dutch East Indies.

Then, the war breaks out and they can only declare war on Japan. Somehow, they manage to fight a war in Europe and Africa, without attacking Germany/Italy. They even manage to send supplies to the USSR without attacking Germany and the UK without attacking Germany/Italy. How were they managing all of this? What was the scale of combat from 1941-1945 against Germany and Italy? The US seemed to have been in a weird limbo where they were clearly at war with everyone, but hadn't declared war yet.
