CMV: If you are physically able and don't have kids, you should donate half of your income to charity, or you are being severely selfish.

This isn't a post saying what you should and shouldn't do with your money, this is my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

We all have a bit of a moral obligation to donate to charity. However, I see 'giving back to the community' as more of a 'paying your rent' rather than being a praiseworthy act of altruism.

I'm not going to give an exact number here, but I believe that if you are earning over a certain amount, and you physically can, then you should be donating roughly half of your income to charity. I hate using the words 'have' and 'should' but those are my honest thoughts.

I'm not going to specify an exact amount for where this 50% threshold starts, but I will say that if you earn a lot more than you need to survive, you should be donating a lot more than you do (or more likely, you don't donate at all). I'm talking about people who work high paying jobs but still have disposable income.

I would consider someone who earns a lot, but only spends as much as they need to live comfortably, then invests the rest to make more money, to be selfish (or at least very unaltruistic).

Imagine every doctor, lawyer, Banker or tech developer in the world donating half of their income to charity. How much of a difference that would make. Saw a video on frontline ER doctors in the US who were buying their own PPE from Amazon because the government didn't supply them any. Imagine how many Doctors would have been saved if everyone in high paid employment donated half of their income to the medical system.

If you have the means but choose not to give back to the community, you are, in my opinion, being selfish.

EDIT: let me clear something up real quick. If you have children and are able to support them, that is an incredibly selfless thing to do. You are already basically donating 100% of your income to keeping your family alive. I'm not talking about parents. People with families already have a moral obligation to provide for their children, and they also don't have time to earn side income or volunteer. I completely understand people with low incomes cannot give up large portions of their income.

In fact, if you have kids, you should be receiving universal basic income, it should be the bare minimum. However, this is a discussion for another time.
