I’m done with the US

I’ve been traveling to Spain the last two years and it’s made me realize that I’m not going to miss living here.

It’s a horrible time for Americans to travel. The dollar is weak, and everything costs more than what it did 2 years ago. Everything in Spain is at an all time high, and they’re in a recession. I’m used to paying $30 for a three course meal, and it now costs $43. But compared to the US, Spain is still much cheaper. Spain has a 22% VAT tax, so everything costs more, but also is included in a much lower income tax. Trying to save money is impossible in the US, because of the value added pricing for everything. I’m a software engineer, and I make a lot of money in the US. But I don’t want to be overworked and underpaid.

We’re a complete joke. No one can travel from the US and expect to afford anything. It’s not like we’re all billionaires.

The worst part is that we’ve become used to this. We’re like the frog, who’s been sitting in boiling water for too long. Everything gets more expensive, but that’s just life. When we visit other countries, we’re shocked at the difference then return home like good little Americans to accept that it’s just too bad.

We’re told it’s the immigrants, or we just need to work harder.

I’ve worked 80-100 hour weeks, traveled extensively, and still had to worry about money constantly. I was told to grind harder, and I would have more money. I grinded harder, and made more money. But nothing changed.

I’m done.

I’ve had the level of prosperity in Spain that I’ve never had in the US. But I’m just one person. My opinion doesn’t matter. If I moved, I would be one out of millions who’s left the US.

I went to college, work a good job, and had a great career in the US. I’ve been to the best cities here, and there’s nothing that we have anymore that compares to the rest of the world. The US is expensive, depressing, and miserable.

I’m moving and leaving the US for good.
