CMV: You don’t own the products you buy on Amazon

I’d argue that Jeff Bezos owns the products you buy from his platforms. He’s hiding in plain site in plain sight. What you’re really doing is paying for a timed subscription to use the products you’ve ‘purchased.’

This has become a major issue for him in recent years with Amazon’s increasing focus on larger electronics. Buyers are using their warranties to get full refunds on broken items and then there is no way for Amazon to salvage the item and have it destroyed instead. He sees this as lost money each time a buyer gets a full refund, he’d rather it be that the buyer gets a product replacement and then he gets to have the broken item destroyed which is cheaper for him.

If you think about it, you don’t actually own your products you buy on Amazon. The moment you make a purchase and you’re ‘given’ the product, you’re actually paying for the right to use that product until it dies. This is why you can’t sell it as a product, only as a used product. You don’t own the product, therefore you are not able to legally resell it.

If you open a product, use it, then attempt to return it to Bezos you will be denied a refund. Why? Because you’re paying for the right to use the product, not to tamper with it. It’s the same reason why you can’t resell it as a brand new product. Further, if the product breaks and you attempt to fix it yourself, once again you will be denied a refund.

I’m not here to defend Bezos, I’m just here to say that you don’t own the products you buy on Amazon. He does. Buyers are not the owners of their products. Until we as buyers are legally considered owners of the products we purchase from Amazon, we will never be able to confirm that we actually own the products we buy on Amazon.
