An intuition is the ability (or natural talent) to acquire knowledge without conscious reasoning. In the areas of philsophy in which intuitions play a central role, the use of intuitions is best understood as a method for answering philosophical questions by attributing properties to hypothetical cases, current events or utterances among other things. For example, philosophers rely on intuitions in thought experiments to verify hypotheses. The origin of the term “intuition” may be traced back to Plato’s theory of recollection, which held that the soul prior to birth was acquainted with the enduring and immutable realm of Being (i.e., that of Forms, Ideas, or Species), with which it retains a residual connection throughout earthly life, enabling it to “recollect” the truth concerning the Forms through introspective contemplation.
