I’m a neurosurgeon, and I can tell you that we as humans have no idea what we are doing when we operate on brains.

The brain is an unfathomably complex and mysterious organ. It does what it wants, and we are the slaves. If there is such a thing as free will, it comes solely from the brain and nowhere else. If we want to believe we have free will, we must also resign ourselves to the fact that our free will is completely bound by what our brain allows us to do.

The downside of this is that we are all slaves to our own brain’s chemistry. Depression? Your brain is chemically fucked. Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD, anger issues, all of it. We all have some amount of brain dysfunction, and our free will is bound by it.

The upside is that, if you believe our brains are capable of creating the illusion of free will, then it’s likely that your brain will always do what it thinks is right, even if that means not doing what “you” want to do.

The human brain is inexplicably amazing. Compressing, processing and remembering the neurologic impulses of millions of sensory inputs every second somehow translates to us having a conscious experience. We are all so blessed to have the opportunity to participate in such a mystery. But holy shit, the brain is an unfathomably complex and mysterious organ. If you think you have free will that isn’t bound by your brain chemistry, you are mistaken.
