I thought I was getting into a Lyft but it was a trafficking attempt.

2 months ago I had a very scary experience. I work in a store on the highway and I’m usually working until 11pm to 1am. I met a guy in my store who asked me if I needed a ride home and I thought it was so sweet. I politely declined and told him I’m taking an Uber home. Most people in the area drive trucks and my Uber always has trouble finding me because of the way my locater is set up on the app. I thought it would be easy for the driver to find me by following me outside and standing next to my phone in order for them to see my location. I told the guy from earlier to pick me up and I went outside to wait.

20 minutes passed and I still haven’t gotten any notifications from the app that my driver has arrived. I use the app frequently so I know how it works, and I know that if a driver isn’t nearby then I will get an estimated time of arrival for them. I was getting a little frustrated so I called the driver. He said that he’s stressed out and having trouble finding me and please cancel the ride so he can get another one. I didn’t think it was weird because I’m used to them having trouble finding me. I cancelled the ride and requested another one. 45 minutes go by and I’m getting really frustrated at this point because I thought I was going to be stuck outside for god knows how long. I called the driver again and they said that they’re also having trouble finding me. I’m so fed up at this point and I was stuck outside for so long. Then the guy I met earlier texted me asking if I wanted a ride home. I was hesitant at first but I didn’t want to be stuck outside so I agreed.

He picked me up and I got in the car and he started driving towards my neighborhood. I asked him “you know where I live right?” He said yes but then started asking me which way to go. One of the roads he asked about is the road I live on but it doesn’t go to my house and it’s my neighbors road. I told him to go down one of the roads that I knew would take me to another road that leads to my street. He then said “you don’t have to give me directions I know where I’m going.” I thought it was weird that he said that because he just asked me for directions. We started driving down the road away from my neighborhood. I told him to stop and I need to get out. He stopped and I got out and walked back towards my house. I called another Uber and walked back to my meeting spot.

It wasn’t until a few days later I started thinking about the whole situation and realized it was weird. The guy that offered me a ride knew exactly where I worked because he met me in the store. It made no sense for both of my Uber drivers to have trouble finding me. They were able to locate me in the past. It made no sense for the guy to ask me for directions and then say he knows where he’s going. I realized that he had no intentions of taking me home at all. He met me in the store on purpose. He was waiting for me outside but I didn’t think anything of it. My heart sank when I realized that I escaped something bad. I felt like it was a human trafficking attempt. The way things played out was too weird for it to be anything else.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately but it scares me to death thinking about what could have happened to me.

Edit: I didn’t get into a car with him when he offered me a ride at first because I had an ex that tried to kidnap me so I wasn’t dumb enough to get in just anyone’s car.
