I'm not excited for my wife to come home from over seas.

My (m35) wife (f33) is a teacher at an international school in South East Asia. We've been here for 3 years.

While we were originally excited about the prospect of living abroad, we quickly realized that this place is more hell than it is a paradise. The weather, traffic, pollution, and food are terrible here.

I had a job lined up to teach at a university here but they ended up giving me a job to teach high school and I hated it. I was overworked, underpaid, and treated poorly at my previous job so I quit and started a business. My business is going very well and I have plenty of free time.

My wife on the other hand has been flourishing. She gets treated very well at her school and has plenty of free time. She loves the weather, food, and the expat lifestyle here. We were originally going to ask to stay another year, but with how much I hate living here, we decided not too.

She got sent to the states for a month for training and I realized how much I like it being just me here. There's a lot less arguing, I don't have to accommodate her anymore, and I have all of the free time I want. I really want to move back home and I'm confident we will, but I'm kind of dreading her return, and the conversations that will come with it.

Edit:

Wow, this blew up! I wasn't expecting it to get this big, so I'm going to address some things that are being talked about in the comments.

1. Racism: I'm not racist, I dislike this location. I don't care if someone is white, brown, or black, I'm a nice person to everyone. I've had many students of many races that I've loved having.

2. Food: People are saying that this really a cultural problem and not a location problem. It is 100% a location problem. While American food is processed and shit, it's a lot better than what we get here. What I think is the issue is that most of the food here comes from China or Malaysia. Very little of it is locally produced. So if you want to eat healthy, you're going to be broke.

3. I've been to a lot of places in this country and it's all the same. The really nice places are tourist traps that are made for expats and are expensive to visit.

4. I appreciate all of the advice of finding other locations. Of course we're not just going to leave without exploring options. Right now we're thinking of Portugal or Spain. We're going to try both and see which one we like best.

5. To clarify, I never said that she was the problem. It's just that when she's around, I have a lot less free time. Since I don't have a traditional job, I have a lot of free time. I can do whatever I want whenever I want. It's great, but sometimes I have to accommodate her which is frustrating when I'm free to do whatever I want.

6. I understand that a lot of people don't like when people are critical of other countries and people. I'm not a dick however. I'm a very nice person who treats everyone with respect.

7. The reason why I didn't just go home and wait for her is 1. I didn't want to leave her alone, 2. I didn't want to abandon my company and 3. We have a lot of stuff in our condo that I need her help to pack up. Also, I could come home anytime I want, I just don't want to leave her behind. We're in this together and I love her.

Lastly, I want to reiterate that I love my wife very much. I've been married 11 years and we've been together for 16 years. She's the love of my life and I appreciate her more than I can describe.
