In the last few years, there has been a massive movement on social media to make a desperation for the population to die. In the end, it was a controversial topic with supporters on both sides. Pro-death and no death. Pro-death had more supporters, and the government decided to go through with it. This topic took up my whole newsfeed for months.

I was pro death. People needed to die to allow the planet to heal. I had no desire to die, and many other pro-death people didn't want to, but we all agreed we needed to go. For the planet. It was the right thing to do.

Months passed, and the government announced a new chemical they created that would painlessly kill a person in less than 30 minutes. They also announced that the date had been decided on, and it was just over a year away. The date was November 15th 2050. It was now a well known date. We all had over a year to live and do what we wanted to do.

I had always liked the idea of being a sound designer for a movie. But I never had the chance to do it. So, when the government asked for a designer to create the sound to use while people passed, I jumped at the opportunity. I was selected, and I went to the meeting.

It was a large meeting facility. Hundreds of people were there, and I was the only person selected. I was confused, and when I asked about it, I was told that they wanted a variety of different sounds. So, hundreds of people were selected to make the sounds for hundreds of these tunnels.

I sat down at my selected table, and a man in a lab coat introduced himself. He told me they were from the government, and they had all the details, sound equipment, and chemicals I needed to make the design. I nodded, and got to work.

I started by looking over the tunnel. They had a test tunnel set up in the center of the facility. It was shaped like a large rectangle, and it was about 50 yards long. It was about 10 feet wide, and 10 feet tall. The tunnel was made of a thick glass, and they had a large airlock at each end. It was where the air was taken out, and replaced with the new air containing the euthanizing chemical.

Once I had a good idea of what the tunnel was like, I decided to make a peaceful sound for the people inside. I wanted the people to be comfortable as they passed, them to be able to say there last words, and to be able to tell the other people they loved them. I started with a sound of a light breeze, like you would hear in a field. Then, I added a sound of birds chirping. The sound of a creek flowing. A sound of water hitting the shore. I added a few more sounds of water, and made sure I didn't make it too loud. It was more of a background noise that you didn't notice.

When I was done, I told the man in the lab coat. He came over, listened, and told me the sound was great. They had all the sounds they wanted, and they were leaving. I asked about the hundreds of other people, and he told me they were all being let go. They decided they only needed a few designs, which was why they selected so many people. He thanked me again, and left.

I packed up my stuff, and left. On my way home, I had the sound playing in my car. It was very peaceful. The sounds of the water and the birds reminded me of my childhood. I smiled at the thought. When I got home, I kept the sound playing. It reminded me of being a kid, and going camping or fishing. I liked the sound.

The next day, the government announced all the tunnels were finished, and they were about to use it for the first time. They told us that the tunnels were going to be used for people who were terminally ill or in a lot of pain. People who wanted to go. They said they had selected a few hospitals to test out the technology, and they were going to use it that day.

I watched the live stream of it happening. I recognised the sound. It was mine.

The tunnels were used for a few years, until the date. On November 15th 2050, the government activated all the tunnels, and the air was changed. They did it quickly, and when it was done, the date had been changed to June 15th 2145. The date was now well over 100 years away, and they told us the tunnels would be used until then.

I watched the live stream again. I recognised the sound. It was mine.

I sat back in my chair and wondered how many people had passed to my sound. How many people were going to pass to my sound. I wasn't sure how I felt about it. I had helped end thousands of lives. Tens of thousands. Hundreds of thousands. I had no idea how many, but I knew it was a lot.

I sat back and thought. When my time came, I decided I was going to go through the tunnel. I loved my sound, and I wanted to pass to that sound.
