What are some good books to help me understand philosophy?

I've been really interested in philosophy for a while, but I've never so much as read a whole philosophy book. I'm interested in thoughts, ethics, character, and existence, etc. so what are some good books to help me understand philosophy more? I've heard things like this so-and-so book changed my life, but I don't know where to start.
