As a healthcare worker, I find clapping extremely cringy. This is literally my job I choose to do it, I’m not a hero. It’s not like the US military where you can be drafted, if you don’t like it, find another job.

I feel like I just wasted my time typing this, since it seems like every single person who sees this will downvote it before reading it.

First, a disclaimer:
I have countless hours of training to keep patients safe and make sure I can do everything in my power to give them the best treatment possible. I also have spent an ungodly amount of money to gear up for this virus so I don’t accidentally contaminate a patient with Covid-19.

I work in an occupation where it is possible to contract the virus, but that is for every single frontline worker, whether it be the grocery store worker, gas station worker, mailman, or whoever. Protecting myself is my job. I do not need a thanks for keeping myself safe.

Walking to my parking spot to go home and having people clap for me is so awkward. I just want to go home to my family. I don’t know you, and I don’t even know if you’re clapping for me, but I think you are and I just want to go home. Seriously, it’s embarrassing.

I also realize that if i ever feel like my job is too high risk and I don’t want to contract Covid-19, I can always quit and find a lower risk job. I can’t imagine having the type of pressure I already have AND being drafted. That would be awful.

I just don’t think clapping outside my hospital everyday is justified. If you want to thank me for my work, just let me do it in peace. No need to clap for me.
