My job is to trap live animals and kill them. I hate it when people compare me to a serial killer

I'm an animal control officer. I spend most of my time picking up live animals that are living in the walls, attic, basement, or that are dangerous to the public. I'm also a wildlife trapper. That means I set traps to catch animals that are causing problems or are a threat to people or pets. For example, I'll get calls from people who hear animals living in the walls or attic, or animals that are aggressive that need to be trapped and relocated or killed.

I don't want to do this. I got this job because I want to be a police officer, and this was an easy transition because it's for the same city and they always promote from within. But I'm still relatively new. I have to do this for at least a couple years.

The problem is, my boyfriend keeps joking that I'm like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer. He says I get pleasure from hunting and killing animals. I don't. There is nothing I would rather be doing than redoing a house or something like that. I hate animals for the most part, but I don't like killing them. I just take comfort in the fact that I caught the bad ones and am protecting people and pets from dangerous animals.

My boyfriend knows I hate it but thinks it's funny to mess with me. I told him to stop but he won't. He will joke about it to his friends and family. He'll say things like, "My girlfriend catches and kills animals all day, just like Dahmer." Or, "My girlfriend traps raccoons and kills them." They'll ask me why, and I'll explain that it's to protect public safety or property when I'm just doing my job.

I feel like this is letting people get the wrong impression. I did nothing wrong by doing my job. And I'm not a serial killer.
