The CPI(M) has been the primary party of power in Kerala for the most part, and has been pretty decent in both governance and development. CPI(M) is seen as a source of power, strength, and dignity in the rural agricultural areas in the states where they have a strong presence.

However, when the CPI(M) is asked to address issues outside of their traditional comfort zones of agriculture, it's seen that they are absolutely poor in responding, the recent example being the Sabarimala women entry verdict. Feminism was gaining a lot of traction in India, and the CPI(M) in order to prove that they are truly committed to feminism, entered into a crusader mode and decided to ensure the entry of women into Sabarimala, going out of their way to ensure the implementation of this verdict, despite the clear negative popular opinion and the backlash against it.

In the end, the CPI(M) lost power to the Congress party due to this very issue alone. The CPI(M) government didn't do much for the ordinary Malayali, but the CPI(M) was the only party that truly stood with the people against the RSS's hindutva agenda that is pretty prevalent in Kerala.

The CPI(M) is so poor in their response to modern issues that they truly don't have any position other than supporting any "progressive virtue" that they are willing to go to war for, without any regard to what the people want. This over enthusiastic zeal of the CPI(M) in chasing after progressive buzzwords and ignoring the opinions of ordinary people truly makes them unfit for power in today's world.

The CPI(M) is also pretty poor in responding to both popular opinion and the newer challenges such as hindutva, they are unable to grasp how people's opinions and perception of issues are shaped on the internet and social media and are unable to navigate and address these challenges.

The CPI(M) has spent more time on both the internet and social media to police the internet and weed out dissenting voices than actually responding to the concerns of ordinary people, which is pitiful by any measure.

In the end, the CPI(M) in Kerala is a pretty poor government that can't do much for ordinary people except the political posturing of a crusader that is jumping from one issue to the next, without addressing the actual concerns of ordinary people.
