Why did the US, after the war, let Joseph Mengele get away?

He did all those cruel and inhuman experiments on people, with no regard to consent, and I heard he was eventually able to get away by escaping to Brazil and living there until his death. The Americans had access to all sorts of information after the fall of the Third Reich, why didn't they get him?
