What is the Singularity?

First thing to note is that no one can know for sure what The Singularity will be like, as it is currently beyond human intelligence, but here's a simplified explanation of our best guesses. <br><br>The Singularity is a point of time that we may be approaching, where a self improving artificial intelligence becomes capable of improving itself at an exponential rate, and where an intelligence explosion occurs and the AI becomes orders of magnitude more intelligent than us, humans. <br><br>Because of its exponential growth, it's difficult to guess when exactly the Singularity will happen, as any predictions are based on linear growth, and linear growth can't keep up with the exponential growth of an improving AI. If you imagine linear growth as a straight line going up, you could draw a diagonal line through the middle of it to represent exponential growth. <br><br>Another point to make is that the singularity might not necessarily be a single event, but a series of events leading towards human level AGI, and then ASI. <br><br>The Singularity could solve many of the world's problems, and it's been compared to a new era for humanity, like the Stone Age leading into the Iron Age. <br><br>There are many risks associated with developing an ultra powerful AI, so we need to develop value aligned AI. Value alignment is the teaching of human values to an AI, such as self-determination, and individual liberty, and to make sure that the AI's goals align with ours. For example, if we commanded a super intelligent AI to solve world hunger, but it didn't share our values, it might kill half the world so that the other half could survive. So we need to make sure that the AI is capable of reasoning in a way that aligns with our ethics. <br><br>The Singularity could be amazing for us, but it could also be our demise, depending on how we control the AI. <br><br>There are precautions being taken to ensure that this powerful AI is aligned and benevolent towards humans. <br><br>Organisations such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind are working towards developing AGI and ASI safely through research and testing. <br><br>&#x200B;
