I asked my cousin, who works in a suburb of Chicago as a police officer, about the issues in Chicago. He's a Chicago native so I figured he'd have a pretty informed opinion. I call Chicago "a war zone" and he agrees, but I also said that the police were to blame. Again, he agreed. He informed me that the Chicago Police Department is corrupt and that they let the gang violence take over. He said that they used to pick up gang members and then were forced to let them go by their superiors. He also said that there are a lot of police brutality cases that are covered up. He had a couple anecdotes about police in the CPD that broke into houses and were caught by supervisors with bags of crack and money, but instead of being arrested they were just let go with a slap on the wrist. He said they call the CPD the "Wild West" because they can do whatever they want without being held accountable. He also said a lot of people in the CPD call Chicago "Chiraq" and say that the city is gone.

My cousin said he left Chicago because of the corruption and lack of accountability.

Now I don't know how widespread this issue is, but he said if he had to put a number to it, he's only met about 10-20% of cops in the CPD that he actually respects and would call "good cops".
