Do dentists ever lie about how bad your teeth are?

I (23f) went to the dentist yesterday for a routine check up, and he said I had 6 cavities. I’ve never had one cavity before, so after he told me that, I asked him to show me on the xray where all these cavities are coming from. Then all of a sudden, there were only 2. I’m not trying to bash all dentists, but it feels like they will do anything to get you to pay more (my dental insurance, which I thought was pretty good, doesn’t cover fillings - which now I have to have done for 2 teeth). Or it may just be this specific dentist. So do dentists ever lie to you?
