I (23f) got a random text message from a random guy, but he was walking up to my (real life) front door!

I want to preface that I live in a 2 story building that is 4 apartments in total. 2 on top, 2 on bottom. I have a roommate, and we are very good friends. We don't have our own washer & dryer, but there is one in the basement of our building. We can buy tokens to get the washer/dryer working. 1 token per each load. My balcony is connected to 4 balconies in total, and there is a staircase. This is important, because I believe that is how he got onto our balcony. There is no other way to do so (other than having a ladder). You will be reading this from my POV.

We do laundry every Sunday. We run into a few of the neighbors sometimes, and that is the only time we run into other neighbors. Today was different. Today was terrifying. I came home from work a little earlier than my roommate, who told me that she would be staying later than usual. I believe she said 7:30 PM would be when she comes home. I got home around 5:00 PM. I decided to get the laundry done since I was home, and it would also help my roommate get home if she finished work even later than planned. I gathered all the laundry and brought it downstairs to the washer. I put in a token, threw the first load in, closed the lid, and left to go back upstairs.

A few minutes later, I got a text from an unknown number that said: "I'm coming through! Can you hear me?" I screenshot the text message and sent it to my roommate and my boyfriend. Told them that I got a creepy text from an unknown number, and to send help if I text them anything out of the ordinary. Then I responded (thinking it was a spam text) to the text: "Yah, I can hear you. But who tf is this?". The guy responded back by saying it was my neighbor. I was a bit confused, because none of my neighbors had my number. I decided to entertain him and asked which neighbor he was. He said that he was the guy that lived on the top right (as you're walking up to the main entrance of the building). I asked him how he got my number, and he said that he was spying on me and saw me put my number in my roommate's phone. I didn't remember doing that, but it was possible since I do use my roommate's phone every once in a while. I asked him why he's texting me, and he said he wanted to learn more about me. Okay. Sure, why not, I'll entertain you, but not too much. (I was still thinking it was a spam text). I said I was doing laundry, and that I was busy. He said that he was still going to come through, and that he would meet me down at the washer. When I was walking back down, I had a bad feeling and I decided to check my phone to see if this was actually a spam text. I looked back at our text history and realized that this was actually my first text to him. There were no previous texts, which made my heart sink. Then, I noticed the 3 dots popping up and it said "I'm right behind you!". I looked back and there was (literally) a guy standing behind me. I did not see him when I took the stairs up and back down to do the laundry. In hindsight, I should have thought of that. Anyway, I saw him, and bolted. I ran as fast as I could up the stairs and slammed and locked the door. I didn't look back. I didn't want to look back. I didn't dare to look back. I took a few minutes to compose myself and came up with a plan to distract him. I wasn't sure if he was going to come up to our apartment. I did not feel comfortable looking out the window to see if he was on our balcony. I decided to send him some texts and see if he would respond. Then I could figure out what he was doing and if he was still in the neighborhood. I texted him "You need to leave now." And he didn't respond right away, but said something like "What if I don't leave?" (Something to that effect). I told him that I would call the police if he didn't leave. He said alright and I didn't hear from him again. Then again, I was inside my apartment and I didn't have time to check and see if he was still outside.

While I was waiting for my roommate to come home, I decided to send her pictures of all the doors and windows I had locked. It took her about 2 hours to come home, and I was stuck inside (and didn't want to leave) because I didn't know what he was going to do. I told her to call the police when she got home, and the police came shortly after. They took our statements and said that they would send someone over to check the cameras (we have cameras around the building). They said that we would hear back from them in the morning.

I couldn't sleep. (Still can't). I can't look outside the window. I don't feel safe in my own home. If it can happen once, it can happen again. I really hope that the police are able to find something. I hope that they caught him on camera, and that he doesn't come back. I don't know what to do. I'm scared. And I don't know how to feel safe again.
