What was the reaction of average citizens when the first atomic bomb was dropped?

A lot of people were aware of the secret development of the bomb, but when the bomb was actually dropped, what did most people think of it? I read an anecdotal experience of a soldier stationed in the Pacific, and he said it was the most unimpressed he had ever been. It seemed common knowledge to him that if America was to invade Japan, they would have to use something incredible to win.
