It is also an opiate alternative and has been proven to help cure heroine, meth, and opiate addiction.

EDIT: Formatting

EDIT 2: In response to this... If you are looking at the wiki page and looking at the side effects you are not understanding how CMV works. Those side effects are from drug abusers that take kratom with other drugs and overdoses, also it is compared to a medicine that if you don't take it you will have withdrawals... this medicine is methadone. Kratom has been used for thousands of years and is a miracle from mother nature. If you think it is bad for you then I suggest you talk to the millions of people that use it for helping them with depression, anxiety, and addiction.

EDIT 3: Kratom is not a drug it is a supplement, like protein powder or creatine or BCAA. There is no age limit to buy it.

EDIT 4: I am not saying ban pharmaceuticals, I am saying that pharmaceuticals have negative side effects.

EDIT 5: Here is a comment I found that explains it better than I did...

The reason Kratom is banned or heavily restricted in some places is because Big Pharm saw it as a threat to their profits. I've done a ton of research on Kratom and here's what I found:

Kratom, Mitragyna speciosa, is a tree that grows natively in Southeast Asia. For literally thousands of years, people have chewed the leaves of this tree for a stimulant and painkilling effect. It is not a drug, it is a plant that you can buy in various forms (powder, leaves, pills) and it is 100% organic.

The reason Kratom is so great is because of the two main alkaloids that it contains: Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. These two compounds are the most abundant in Kratom and cause the plant's effects. These two compounds bind to the opioid receptors in the body, but don't artificially stimulate it like drugs do. Instead, they help the body to use its natural chemicals more efficiently. This is what helps to boost energy and reduce pain. This is also why so many people take it as a supplement to help manage their opioid addiction.

As for side effects, no one who uses it regularly has ever reported any negative side effects. All negative reports of Kratom come from individuals who claim to have taken it who don't know anything about it. The negative side effects that come with Kratom addiction are no different than caffeine addiction. Headaches, insomnia, restlessness, irritability, depression, anxiety; these are all symptoms that occur when your body is not getting enough of the substance that it needs to function. However, like anything, too much of it is bad for you. The reason that so many people are against it is because of a few reasons. First, they don't know what it is or they think it's a drug. Second, they believe that it's a "legal high" that people abuse to get a "buzz". Third, they're misinformed about the facts of Kratom and think that it's a threat to public health.

The reason that Big Pharm wants it banned is because it is a threat to their profits. Since Kratom is a natural substance, it can't be patented. If a pharmaceutical company can't profit from it, then they want it gone. The reason it became so popular is because of the opioid epidemic. This is because of two reasons. First, Kratom can help manage withdrawal symptoms. Second, Kratom can help block the effects of opioids, which can cause overdose. However, Kratom is not legal in all places. In fact, it is heavily restricted in Kratom's native countries. The reason for this is because the European powers that colonized them didn't want to compete with their own pharmaceutical industries. This is why Kratom is banned in Malaysia, Burma, and Thailand.

Something to note is that Kratom is also very cheap. A kilogram of Kratom powder costs about $20. When you compare that to the cost of prescription medication, it's no wonder that Big Pharm wants it banned.

Overall, Kratom is a great plant that is 100% safe. However, like anything, if you abuse it then it can cause negative consequences. But this is true with literally anything. If you drink too much water, then you can die. If you eat too much food, then you can die. If you take too much Tylenol, then you can die. It's all about moderation.
