Amazon is launching “Kill Switch,” a feature that automatically cancels your subscription if you stop using a service. Kill Switch will be available for digital subscriptions, including streaming services, software, and apps.

The company said it’s introducing the feature to help consumers save money and reduce “subscription fatigue.” It’s calling Kill Switch an “auto-cancel subscription feature” that takes a “hands-off” approach to handling subscription management.

The feature will use algorithms to determine whether a customer hasn’t used a service in a certain amount of time. If that happens, Amazon will send the customer an email to confirm they’re not using the service and give them a chance to opt out of the feature. If the customer confirms their lack of use, Amazon will cancel the subscription.

Kill Switch is also designed to automatically cancel subscriptions that are tied to physical devices, like Kindle e-readers or Alexa smart speakers, if Amazon detects that a user isn’t using those devices.

While the feature is designed to help you save money on dormant subscriptions, it might not actually cancel the subscription. Amazon will only cancel recurring payments through its platform, and it can’t cancel any subscription that’s not managed by Amazon.

Kill Switch will be opt-out, which means that if you don’t want to use it, you’ll have to manually disable it. But if you don’t do that, you might find that some of your unused subscriptions are automatically canceled.

The feature might not play nice with services that require subscriptions to be active even when they’re not being used, like some productivity software or password managers. It also doesn’t account for situations where you might have multiple subscriptions to the same service or if you purchase a subscription as a gift for someone else.
