I laced my braid with thumbtacks as a self defense tactic

I (28F) was 24 years old at the time, and worked in this independent kitchen with no HR department as a line cook for several years.

One of our sous chefs would pull my hair repeatedly, and dress me down in front of the rest of the staff. He was usually very quiet with a bit of a gaming voice, but would get in my face screaming when he thought he had an excuse. After about a year of this, I decided that I’d had enough.

I braided my hair for work one day and wove thumbtacks into it, with the open end facing out. That morning, he gave me a new task and when I told him I was in the middle of something, he grabbed my braid and yanked my head towards him, and let out the most terrifying, painful yelp I’ve ever heard.

He didn’t stop screaming and clutching at his hand for what felt like ten minutes. I was so terrified that I’dactually done something too permanent, but he was able to go home with his sister and get stitches, and didn’t sue. He didn’t bother me for the rest of my time there, and oddly enough, he became much more quiet and respectful to the rest of the staff.
