Someone or Something Has Been Leaving bronzes Outside My House

My husband and I moved into a cozy little bungalow on the outskirts of a small town in the middle of nowhere six months ago, and while we’ve had some ups and downs, we love it here. It’s perfect.

The only real issue, aside from the leaky faucet we can’t seem to fix (and the ants, and the huge spiders in the basement), is that someone or something has been leaving little bronze statues on our front and back porches in the night.

The first one appeared on the first morning we woke up in the house. It was a little bronze rabbit with big round glasses and a backpack full of carrots sitting on the windowsill next to the front door. My husband picked it up, turned it over in his hands, and asked me, “Did you put this here?”

I said no, and he smiled and said, “Well, I guess the previous owners left it for us.”

I liked that idea, because it made the house feel special and the previous owners feel generous. I put the rabbit in my office on my desk and used it as a paperweight. It was sweet.

But three or four days later, my husband found another one sitting next to the first. This one was bronze mouse wearing a wizard’s hat and holding a crystal ball.

The day after that, a bronze goat wearing fairy wings perched on the back of the old wooden rocking chair on our front porch.

The next morning, a bronze owl playing a tiny bronze flute appeared on the other side of the door.

That afternoon, I told my husband, “Someone keeps leaving bronzes on our porch.”

He furrowed his brow and said, “Really? I thought the previous owners left them for us.”

“No. I mean, they left the first one, but there have been new ones every day.” I told him where all the bronzes had shown up, and he just stared at me for a minute and said, “Well, I think they’re cute.” He picked up the rabbit and looked it over, and said, “But maybe you should ask around and see if anyone knows where they’re coming from.”

That night at the grocery store, I asked the cashier, who I recognized as one of our neighbors, “Have you ever heard of people leaving little bronze statues of animals on each other’s doorsteps around here?”

He smiled and said, “No, but that sounds nice.” He leaned in and said, “Here’s some free advice: Enjoy it!” Then he winked at me. I think he was flirting.

I tried again at the post office and the library with the same results. The people around here were very tight lipped about the bronzes.

So, I decided to just enjoy them. My husband and I have a very sweet and whimsical little bronze menagerie on our front and back porches. We’ve found frogs and birds and cats and dogs and even a dragon, all cast in bronze and left on our doorstep every morning.

There have been so many, and they’re all so beautifully crafted, that we’ve started hanging them from the limbs of the huge oak tree in our front yard. It’s become something of a neighborhood attraction, and we’ve gotten many compliments and requests to see inside the house.

It’s a bit creepy, to be honest, but I’m trying to befriend the neighbors, and my husband seems to understand what they mean.

The only downside is that no matter how many animals show up, my rabbit paperweight is still my favorite.
