I'm in the process of moving out of state to be closer to my kids. I put in my resignation at the end of July and am supposed to start at my new school in late August.

I got a call from my principal asking if I can come in today (I only live 20 minutes away although I won't be here next week) as they have no one to cover afternoon duty in my room.

I told her I haven't been in the classroom in 2 weeks, my keys are packed up and I really don't feel comfortable doing this without a stipend or something. She put me on hold and someone else called me back and offered me $50 cash to come in.

I told them NO and if I end up finding out that the kids are roaming the halls because no one is covering my room after lunch, I will contact the school board and express my disappointment.

I love this school and the kids but I feel like I've done nothing wrong by leaving after 10 years. I'm just tired of the system and lack of support in our state for teachers.

I'm in the process of packing my house to move and also trying to find a place to live. I feel like this is petty to try to guilt me in to coming back. I also feel they think I am being paid way too much if they think $50 is enough to take away from all I have going on.

Am I being a jerk?

Edit: I think some people are confused. I am still in the area, but have resigned from the school. I have kids in this district and while I don't want word to get out that I'm a total ******* I do stand by my decision to leave the district. I have made it clear that I am not in a position to do this (I currently have a contractor in my house redoing my floors at this moment) and it would be a huge inconvenience for me to drive to the school and do this for $50.

I also pointed out I DID look into and subbing is a little different and I would have to go through a background check and be added to their sub list which I would rather not do.

I feel like I did my part by being there for 10 years.
