[US] My friend died yesterday, and the police investigated him rather than the woman who broke into his house.

Yesterday I found out that a good friend of mine died, a few days ago. I was very much in shock, as I was not expecting to hear anything like this, especially since he was rather young. According to his parents, he tripped and fell while on a ladder, but he had also been doing drugs. They say it was the drugs that did it. I highly doubt that, as I have seen him do drugs many times, and have also done drugs many times myself, with no ill effects. I am certain that it was the fall, as he has fallen while on ladders before, and has almost died in the past. He also has a minor disability, and his balance was very poor. I knew him since we were children, and used to be neighbors as kids before his family moved to a different part of town. We weren't as close as we used to be when we were kids, but we still hung out sometimes, and I would occasionally stay the night at his house. One time, we were hanging out, and his girlfriend at the time broke into his house, through his front window. The police found her in the house, and she claimed that there was a warrant out for her arrest (which there was), and that she was hiding from the police. I find it impossible that she could have broken into the house without my friend knowing, and I am certain that she was let in, but I don't know why he would do that, when he knew the police were looking for her. Also, I remember her saying something like "I'm going to come over to your house and steal your stuff" one time we were all hanging out, but my friend didn't seem to take it seriously. Anyways, the police found her in the house, and rather than arresting her for breaking and entering, they arrested my friend for obstruction of justice, I believe, because he was trying to get them to not arrest her. She ended up getting off with a misdemeanor, while my friend got a felony charge, which was later reduced to a misdemeanor, but it still caused him a lot of problems. I've heard similar stories from many other people, about how women get off easy for crimes, while men are automatically assumed guilty by the police.
