What is the best approach to solving inflation in the US?

I've been reading many articles in the news recently about inflation in the US and how much of a problem it is. We're all aware of the big creditors (ie states and the federal government) that have not been paying into social security for some time now. I have seen some articles recently that have been talking about instituting a "GST" (Goods and Services Tax) like Australia to help pay into those funds.

I believe that that is a good idea and would go a long way to solving inflation. What are your thoughts on this?
