If you work a 9 to 5 and think you’re a “productive member of society,” you’re a joke

I’m a software engineering intern and I work 8:30 to 4:45, with an hour lunch break. I make $35 an hour, which is great. But I’m not a “productive member of society.” I’m a drone, a worker bee. I’m a cost center in the internal ledgers of the corporation. I’m a cog in a machine, a flesh and blood component of a monster that keeps society functioning.

I don’t make anything. I don’t grow food, or mine coal, or build homes, or make clothes. I write colorful buttons that do little to no significant work for society. I don’t even make things that improve lives or make anything easier to use. I’m a drone.

I’m not a “productive member of society.” I don’t make anything, I don’t produce anything. Sure, I code and has skill sets learned from years of school and work. But my work doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make the world a better place. It’s useless, if not counterproductive. It’s trash, garbage. I’m trash.

So if you think you’re one of the “productive members of society,” you’re a joke. Get over yourself.
