What is this sub for?

I've seen a lot of folks just post random "deep" quotes, or "Would you rather" style scenarios. This is not philosophy. If you want to engage with philosophy, if you want to learn and grow, then you need to do the legwork.

I see countless threads on Wittgenstein and Freud, but no one has read Frege's Begriffschrict, Russell's Principia, or the work that came after Wittgenstein that responded to his ideas. I see countless threads on Kant and Hume, but Kant literally wrote his Critique because of what Hume said, he literally includes that in the introduction. And then you'll get people who haven't even gone through the table of contents of the Critique talking like they know what they're saying. I see countless threads on Marx and Engels, but no one knows the first thing about economics.

I see countless threads on Husserl and Heidegger and Derrida without people knowing the first thing about German Idealism, Kant, or the Ancient Greeks.

I see countless threads on Nietzsche, but people don't even know the first thing about Christianity, even though he spent his entire career writing about it.

I see countless threads on pop psychology, but no one knows the first thing about the actual psychological theories.

I see countless threads on Critical Race Theory, but people don't even know the first thing about race theory or the extensive, extensive, history of race theory. Critical Race Theory as a school of thought has been around for 50 years, racism has been around for hundreds of years. People don't even know the first thing about Queer Theory or gender studies or feminist theory.

I see countless threads on science, but people don't even know the first thing about the philosophy of science. They just regurgitate whatever science headlines they heard for the first time yesterday.

This sub just seems to be a place for people to pretend like they're intelligent. If you want to be intelligent, if you want to be well read and well versed in various topics, if you want to engage with the topics discussed on this sub, then you need to put in the effort to read. Read the primary texts. Read secondary sources. Read tertiary sources. Read the responses to those. That's how you learn. That's how you engage in any topic.

If you just want to sound smart without putting in the effort that's fine, but this isn't the place for that.
