Google on Thursday announced Gemini, a next-generation AI chatbot that will be able to answer search queries, giving users more nuanced responses to questions. The tech giant said it built Gemini to help users who have more complex searches that might require more detailed information.

Gemini is a more advanced version of Bard, an AI chatbot that Google launched in February. Bard was Google's first foray into AI-based customer service and has only been available to select users, mostly as a trial version. Gemini, however, will be integrated into Search or Google's query response system.

Gemini has “greater capabilities and context,” said Jeffrey Dean, Google's senior vice president of AI, in an interview with CNN. He added that Gemini would improve what Bard could do and that the next-generation AI model “will be able to carry on a conversation longer than Bard and be able to answer questions that are more complex.”

Gemini represents Google's effort to make its Search capabilities more advanced and provide more detailed answers to users' search queries. Gemini will know how to answer follow-up questions or even be able to share its own opinion on something, giving users a more nuanced response. For instance, Gemini would be able to share a user's opinion on a major news event if they asked it or give more detailed answers to more complicated questions that might require more context.

Gemini is also designed to be more up to date on recent events. For example, if a user wanted to know the latest on a news story, Gemini would be able to provide more recent information, according to a report from the Verge. In comparison, Bard's information might be more outdated.

Gemini's capabilities are more in line with Microsoft's CopilotX or Open AI's Chat GPT Plus.

Gemini has not been rolled out yet, but Google did announce its arrival on Thursday, ahead of its Search On event scheduled for next week.
