General Tso, also spelled as Zuo, Zuo Zongtang, was a Qing Dynasty general who was born in 1812 and died in 1885. General Tso’s chicken was allegedly invented in Taiwan in the 1950’s by a General Tso’s nephew. It has since become enormously popular in the United States but unpopular in mainland China. Also note that General Tso did not have a nephew because he died without children.

This chicken dish was introduced to the United States by another Chinese immigrant who cut the sugar to 30% of the original amount and added cashews to respect the American taste of sweet but not too sweet.

I did not find any evidence that General Tso was the nephew of General Tso’s chicken’s inventor. I did however find multiple articles stating that General Tso was the nephew of General Tso of the Qing Dynasty.

I do not believe that General Tso’s chicken was invented by General Tso or his nephew, but I believe that the nephew of General Tso did in fact steal the credit for General Tso’s chicken.
