“That’s just how society is, why can’t you just accept it”

I’m so sick of hearing this phrase getting used as a justification for society being the way it is. I’m tired of hearing men using it to justify their shitty attitudes & treatment of women. I’m tired of hearing women use it as a cop out for why they don’t see a problem with treating other women like shit. I’m tired of hearing it from everybody when I talk about wanting change whether it’s for women, poc, in the gay community etc. I’m tired of hearing “that’s just how it is, don’t question it”

There’s so many things in life that are fucked up in this bullshit patriarchal society that we live in, especially the way women are treated. We’re expected to just be okay with it. We’re expected to be okay with this “boys will be boys” bullshit, we’re expected to be okay with being treated like objects, we’re expected to be okay with so many things we shouldn’t be okay with. We’re expected to be complacent and complicit in our own oppression. The same goes for so many other groups.

Why can’t you people see that this line of thinking is the fucking problem? If we all just sat around and accepted the status quo, nothing would ever change. We’d all still be cavemen. The only reason anything ever changes is because PEOPLE WITH FUCKING BACKBONES STAND UP AND SAY NO. If we ALL lived by this attitude that we should just accept things as they are without question, we’d still be living in a society where slaves are a normal thing. We wouldn’t have an Australia where first nations people have (some) rights, we’d still be living in an Australia where Aboriginals were treated as subhuman. We wouldn’t be working towards LGBTQ+ equality.

So many things would be totally fucked and not changing if it wasn’t for people that stand up and demand change. People that aren’t afraid of ruffling feathers and shaking the system. People that are willing to put their necks on the line to say “I don’t agree with this and I’m going to fight to change it”

Why is this concept so hard for people to grasp? Why is it so hard for people to comprehend that just because something has *always* been a certain way, it doesn’t mean that it should stay that way? Why is it so hard for people to comprehend that just because society functions certain ways, doesn’t mean that we should just accept that as the status quo and not want to change it.

I’m over people using this line of thinking as a justification for shitty behaviours, shitty attitudes or shitty treatment of ALL people. I’m over hearing it when I stand up for myself and I’m over hearing it when I advocate for change. I’m over people being so accepting of shitty behaviour and shitty treatment just because they think “that’s just how it is”
