I’m a former teacher, and the first time I logged on to Chambers in months, I got this notification:

r/teachers is restricted from users under 18 (NSFW?) without an account age of at least 30 days.

I wish this chamber had existed when I started teaching in 2016. I was the kid who started college at 16, got her secondary education teaching cert at 19, and her special education cert at 20, and was teaching full time at 20.

After being in the profession for 7 years, I left this past school year to find a job that paid enough to be able to rent an apartment.

I now work in recruiting for a software company and make triple what I made as a teacher.

The other day, I received these texts from a parent:

[Parent]: Hey! How have you been?

[Me]: I’ve been alright. The transition hasn’t been so hard for me, but I definitely miss the kids a lot. How have you and [former student] been?

[Parent]: Yeah, my youngest is doing well. I was going to ask you if you still had the whiteboard markers that we bought? We lost them when we moved and would like to get them back.

[Me]: Yeah, I have them, along with everything else you purchased for the classroom.

[Parent]: Oh wow. I didn’t realize it was that much. What did you do with it all?

[Me]: I took everything with me. Everything I purchased, everything you purchased, everything donated, everything from the supply drives, everything from the school supply closet, everything. It’s all in my garage.

[Parent]: That’s wild. I’m sorry you had to do that.

[Me]: It’s all material stuff. I took my teaching supplies, my winter stuff, my summer stuff, and my dog. That’s all I really needed. I’m not sure what the school is going to do for the next school year, but I’m not there to help figure it out.

I spent 7 years teaching, and when I left, I took every single thing I had (remember, this is a special education classroom, so a lot of the supplies were also materials for my students with sensory processing disorder, ADHD, autism, anxiety, etc.)

Did you bring anything with you when you left?
